RALEIGH, N.C. — With a little more than two weeks left in the open enrollment period, signups for health insurance through the Affordable Care Act are down 14 percent this year.

Data from the federal Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services show 140,741 people in North Carolina signed up for coverage on the HealthCare.gov marketplace between Nov. 1 and Nov. 24. That was down from the 164,436 signups during the same period in 2017.

"Thousands of North Carolinians are at risk of not having health care coverage in 2019 because they just don’t know that now is the time to sign up for coverage," Joshua Peck, co-founder of Get America Covered, said in a statement.

The open enrollment period ends Dec. 15.

According to a survey by the Kaiser Family Foundation, 61 percent of uninsured people aren't aware of the deadline to sign up for ACA coverage, up from 53 percent a year ago.
