People gathered for a walk in Fuquay-Varina Sunday to bring awareness to suicide prevention.

There have been hundreds of deaths, all tied to suicide, in the state of North Carolina this year and the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention is trying to help fix the problem.

According to the foundation, there have been more than 1500 deaths associated with suicide in North Carolina in one year.

Organizers and people impacted by suicide say awareness, communication and talking are all critical pieces of prevention.

"I am a licensed clinical mental health counselor, my mother had a suicide attempt when I was 15 years old. I’ve lost lots of people to suicide," said April Dupree with Central Carolina Walk. "I’m a suicide advocate because I also suffered from suicide ideation when I was 19 years old."

There are walks like this happening this fall all to bring awareness to a major problem plaguing the country and the Tar Heel state.
