Adventurous trailblazer: Durham woman who died from fall at Pilot Mountain remembered for her kind spirit
A Durham woman is being remembered for her adventurous spirit and community work after dying in a 90-foot fall at Pilot Mountain State Park.
Posted — UpdatedMiriam Cho, 30, was rock-climbing near the south parking lot close to the knob of Pilot Mountain when she fell Monday afternoon. She fell from the top of the climbing route below the parking lot overlook – one of the tallest climbing routes at that park.
Angie Hong, her former classmate at Duke University, said she and Cho were as close as family.
"She was a really passionate, compassionate member of the Durham community," said Hong. "Very involved in justice work in the area."
Cho was also a budding filmmaker who had just received a grant through North Carolina Asian Americans Together to do a documentary focusing on Asian Americans in North Carolina.
An avid volunteer, Cho is described by Hong as "one of those people who was very loved and treasured, both as a person, [and] for her brilliance and her quirkiness."
Cho loved the outdoors – climbing, bouldering, hiking.
"She was wise but also very childlike at the same time. Everybody loved hanging out with her," said Hong.
