FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. — Two adults are charged after a 12-year-old was found in possession of their .380 pistol, according to the Cumberland County Sheriff's Office.

Cory McMillen, 36, and Michelle McMillen, 38, both of Fayetteville, were charged Monday with storage of a firearm to protect minors.

The charges stem from an incident that occurred over the weekend, officials said.

According to officials, it's the second time in a month the Cumberland County Sheriff's Office has investigated a child in possession of a firearm.

"The Sheriff’s Office would like to remind everyone that owns a weapon to please be responsible," Sheriff Ennis W. Wright posted on Facebook. "If you need a gun lock to safely store your weapon, please come to the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office located at 131 Dick Street and pick up a gun lock free of charge."
