WAKE FOREST, N.C. — A series of active shooter safety classes offered by the Wake Forest Police Department has spiked the interest of the public.

Due to extremely high interest, police will hold their fourth Civilian Response to Active Shooter Events -- or CRASE -- class Monday to help people prepare for a possible active shooter situation.

The classes are held at the Wake Forest Renaissance Centre, where police said the first CRASE class offered was booked within the hour. Monday's class is full, too, so people interested in taking the class will have to wait until 2019.

During the class, Wake Forest police officers walk through options you may have if confronted with an active shooter.

Police say there are two takeaways from the class that apply to all scenarios:

Resolve that you are going to survive. Focus on your reason to live whether it’s your husband, wife or child.
Trust your instincts. If you believe a situation isn’t safe, get out of there -- don’t wait for someone else to tell you to evacuate.

Bill Harrison took the CRASE class and told WRAL he recommends it to everyone.

"You never know how you're going to react in a situation like that, but at least I have the knowledge," said Harrison. "Hopefully, I'd do the right thing."

There will be more classes in 2019.

The course is free, but online registration is required.
