ROANOKE, VA. — A 12-year-old Virginia girl who went missing last week was found safe in San Fransisco, authorities said Friday.

Police said Brittany Mae Smith was found with her mother's boyfriend, 32-year-old Jeffrey Easley.

Police said the pair were at a grocery store on Friday when someone recognized them from news reports and contacted officials. Easley was taken into custody.

An arrest warrant had been issued for Easley this week on a charge of abduction after Smith's mother was found dead on Monday at her Salem, Va., home. Her death has been ruled a homicide.

Smith had been missing since Dec. 2. Officials are working on arrangements to bring her back to Virginia.

At one time, authorities thought Easley might have been traveling through North Carolina.
