Fayetteville, N.C. — Several downtown streets were blocked off for a while Thursday morning as authorities investigated two suspicious suitcases found outside the Cumberland County Board of Elections building.
Authorities said they received a call at around 9:20 a.m. after a employee at the building noticed the black suitcases on a ramp leading into the building, located at 301 E. Russell St.
Several businesses in the area were evacuated, and East Russell and south Cool Spring streets were closed off.
By 11 a.m., authorities had determined that the suitcases contained only clothes, wooden plaques and immigration papers. There is no word on the owner of the suitcase.
A bus station is near where the suitcases were found, and authorities said a traveler probably left them on the sidewalk by mistake.
Workers were later allowed to re-enter the building and authorities re-opened the roads in the area.
