A Meal Kit Company With a Global Focus

Posted June 19, 2018 2:18 p.m. EDT

Confronted with an Indian recipe that requires fresh lemon grass or one from Thailand that needs bird chile powder, even an experienced cook with a well-stocked pantry is likely to move on. Global Belly, a new meal kit company, includes all the fresh ingredients — even the hard to find ones — premeasured and with precise instructions for a number of Thai and Indian dishes. I was mostly satisfied with baby eggplants stuffed with spices and braised in tomato, southern Indian stir-fried shrimp, a Thai steak salad, and skewers of marinated tofu and vegetables. My only quibble was that the flank steak, sourced from Pat LaFrieda, was chewy. The recipes include how and when the dish is served in its country of origin, and the meal options change weekly. Orders and subscriptions can be flexible, so customers can select their own menus and the frequency of delivery.

Global Belly, $49.95 per box (two dishes, serves four to six people in total) with a subscription, $54.95 without; globalbelly.com.
