FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. — A Fayetteville woman said she was asleep and her husband was cooking breakfast when lightning struck their roof.

"It was a very loud boom, just all of a sudden," said Rosemary Haney. "I was up like that. I thought the oven had blown up because my husband was making biscuits."

Haney said it was a passerby that told them their roof was on fire.

"A car pulled up and said your house is on fire, and I called 911," Haney said.

The Fayetteville Fire Department responded to the home, located at 336 W. Summerchase Drive in the Fairfield Farms subdivision, around 2:15 a.m.

Firefighters said the two-story home was struck by lightning, and the fire was contained to the roof line.

Lightning strike to blame for Fayetteville house fire

The lightning strike damaged the electrical wiring in the house, forcing Haney, her husband and one pet to leave home until repairs can be made. The natural gas line was shut off as a precaution.

No one was injured in the fire, which was extinguished quickly. Officials estimated damage to be around $5,000.
