This weekend is a full moon weekend!
February’s full moon, also known as the Snow Moon, will occur Sunday morning at exactly 2:33 a.m. EST.
To the naked eye, however, the moon will appear full the night before and the night after, making the whole weekend a time during which you can look up at the night sky and see the full moon.
February’s full moon is called the Snow Moon because it’s the middle of winter, and for many parts of the country, this is typically the snowiest time of year.
In some parts of the country, though, you probably wouldn’t know it’s the snowiest time of year just from looking outside. However, the Rocky Mountains and northern reaches of the continental United States have plenty of snow, according to NOAA’s National Snow Analyses.
As of Feb. 5, a little more than a third of the country had snow on the ground, and last month, it was even less, with about 30 percent of the United States covered in snow.
There are 11 more full moons left in 2020, and the next one falls on March 9, a day after most of the country will spring forward when Daylight Saving Time begins.
