WAYNE COUNTY, N.C. — It's a Christmas present for your wallet - gas prices are hovering around the $2 in parts of central North Carolina

In Wayne County, gas dropped to $1.68 at one Speedway gas station, but customers say a 20 minute drive could save you a few more cents.

At a Dollar General in Fremont, gas was $1.65 or $1.62 with a store card.

"It's a lot cheaper to go see my family, which, that is important to me," said Daniel Lambert. "I might want to go out and buy a new truck."

According to AAA Carolinas, the average cost for a gallon of regular gas in North Carolina is $2.18.

"Makes you feel good," said James Ward.

In Wayne County, people attribute the low prices to competition.

After the holiday rush, demand for gas is expected to dwindle even more.

But AAA says oil-producing nations in OPEC are expected to cut production to steady the market. In other words - enjoy the low prices while they last.
