A bird? A plane? Nope! It will be a helicopter dropping 15,000 Easter eggs on a Raleigh field Saturday

Now here's a fun twist on the egg hunt ...

Southbridge Fellowship will host a Helicopter Egg Drop from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., Saturday, March 31, where they will drop 15,000 plastic Easter eggs onto the football field at Pine Hollow Middle School from an actual helicopter.

Yep ... something that might look kind of like this ...

Helicopter

Not the first Helicopter Egg Drop

Aimee Caverly, who works at the nondenominational church, which meets on Sundays at Pine Hollow Middle School in north Raleigh, tells me this is the first time the church has dropped Easter eggs from a helicopter though others in the area have done it before.

Newhope Church in Garner has offered similar events in the past. And Hubb's Farm in Clinton dropped eggs from an airplane this past weekend during its EGG-ceptional Egg Hunt. Caverly said Southbridge held an egg hunt last year, but mostly for the decade-old church's families and it didn't involve a helicopter.

"This year, we really felt compelled to reach out to the community," she said. "Our hopes are, we're having our church services the following day, and, that if people are led that way, they would come back and hear the message about Jesus for Easter."

Three egg hunts planned

Caverly tells me they have lots of safety plans in place. All of the eggs, which are filled with candy or small toys, are taped shut. And all egg hunters and their families must be off the field when the helicopter drops the eggs. A DJ will be communicating with people when it's time to step off the field and when it's time to go get those eggs.

The church hired Blue Line Aviation to provide the helicopter. Southbridge's youth pastor will be the one to drop the eggs out of it.

Three hunts are planned. The first, around 10:15 a.m., is for young children ages 1 to 3. For that first hunt, the eggs won't drop from the sky, but will be placed on a small section of the field. The first helicopter drop will happen for the egg hunt designed for kids ages 4 to 7. The second will drop eggs for kids ages 8 to 11.

Caverly recommends getting there before 10 a.m. so you have time to park and get to the field. If this egg hunt is like any egg hunt, those eggs will get scooped up pretty quickly. Pine Hollow is at 5365 Bartram Place, Raleigh.

Not just an egg hunt

The free event also includes inflatables and games for kids. Food trucks, including Will and Pops, JAM Ice Cream, Not Just Icing, MexiArepa Grill and Mr. Mongolian, will be on site selling all kinds of food and treats. Caverly said they're prepping for a crowd.

"We're preparing ourselves for a significant number of people," she said. "We really want to reach out to the general community."
