Leaders at Wayne County Public Schools report there are 11 recent coronavirus cases in 10 schools across the county. None of the positive cases has led to a cluster, according to the school system's data.
Six of the schools that have recently reported a case of coronavirus are elementary schools, three are high schools, and one is a middle school. Spring Creek Elementary school has reported two cases, according to the WCPS data.

Wayne County Public School students spent the first three weeks of school taking classes online and returned for part-time, in-person learning a month ago.

All 11 active cases have been reported in the past five days, according to the school system's data, which updates everyday at 6 p.m.

Last week, Brogden Primary School had to go back to online learning for two weeks due to coronavirus cases in the school.

Tiffany Kilgore represents Wayne County's Association of Educators and is a choral teacher at Norwayne Middle School. She contracted the virus back in September and has since recovered.

"We've seen the slow uptick, but what's concerning is we are seeing the exponential growth. That right here is what I'm trying to sound the alarm on," Kilgore said.

She said that the coronavirus dashboard the district released is not accurately portraying how many cases of coronavirus are in schools.

The dashboard only shows how many cases have been reported in the district since Oct. 10. A spokesperson for the school district said since the week of Aug. 10, WCPS has had 94 reported coronavirus cases.

The staff at any school that has a case is alerted by email. Parents of students at schools with cases are notified by the school's call system.

Rebecca Bean, a Wayne County schools parent, described the cases within the school district as "extremely concerning."

"Just knowing how things are happening in the schools and how inconsistent some of the protocols are happening at different schools and different locations," she added.

Kilgore said daily cleaning isn't being done properly.

"We don't have custodial staff, or if we do have the staff, all they can do is sanitize, but they're not cleaning because they don't have time to do both," she explained. "We know remote learning is not what's best for our kids, but we need to put their safety before their learning."

Additional coronavirus cases reported in Wayne County Public Schools interim superintendent Jim Merrill said people are out in the communities during the weekend and the virus is being brought back into the school. He added that the district is doing a "a great job of keeping people safe."
