RALEIGH, N.C. — A 6-year-old girl told her mother that a man broke into her bedroom in north Raleigh while she slept, took her and then later returned after he tried to take off her underwear, according to a 911 call released Thursday afternoon.

Investigators say the man entered an apartment at Mission Capital Crossing on Dansey Drive around 3:45 a.m. Wednesday, kidnapped the child and then took her behind the building.

When the man left, the girl woke up her mother, who called police at 3:57 a.m. after finding the child's bedroom window open, its screen removed and a chair outside.

"She told him to not mess with her underwear and to take her back inside. She was tired," the mother said in the call.

"I asked her, 'What did he do to you?' and she said, 'I can't tell you,'" the mother also said.

The girl wasn't able to offer a good description, but police, who have been canvassing the neighborhood looking for leads, want anyone with information that could help them to call Raleigh Crime Stoppers, at 919-834-4357.

Police won't elaborate on the matter or say whether they believe any other crimes occurred before the man returned her.

The abduction, meanwhile, has stunned neighbors.

"My blood boiled," said Michailia Minto. "But I was relieved that she didn't get taken."
