Later this year, those who get a new phone number in southeastern North Carolina will see a new area code. The change impacts those moving to cities like Fayetteville, Wilmington or moving onto Fort Bragg.

The new 472 area code will overlay the existing 910 area code, serving the same geographic region. The move does not require current 910 phone numbers to change.

Organizers with the North American Numbering Plan Administrator said the remaining supply of available new telephone numbers in the 910 area code will be exhausted sometime in late 2022. At that point, assignment of new numbers using the 472 area code will begin.

The 910 code has served Fayetteville, Jacksonville, Lumberton, Wilmington, and the military installation of Fort Bragg, within the counties of Cumberland, Onslow, Robeson, and New Hanover for decades.

Starting on Oct. 7, customers in the 910 area code may be assigned a 472 number if they request new service. Once the new area code is in effect, those with a 472 number will be required to use 10-digit dialing including the area code for all local calls.

The North Carolina Utilities Commission approved the implementation of the area code.
