FAYETTEVILLE, N.C.

What's next for the 910 area code?

The North Carolina Utilities Commission announced Thursday 472 area code will serve the same geographic area already in the 910 area code in southeastern N.C.

Where is the 910 area code?

The 910 area code region includes Fayetteville, Jacksonville, Lumberton, Wilmington and Fort Bragg located in Cumberland, Onslow, Robeson and New Hanover counties.
Customers with a 910 number will be able to keep their existing number. The 472 area code will be assigned once 910 has been exhausted, which will likely happen in the first quarter of 2023, since the area is growing, officials said.

Residents setting up a new phone line may be issued the 472 code as early as October, officials said.

People who live in or are moving to the 910 region can prepare by taking the following steps:

  • Check devices to verify that area codes are included with all stored numbers.
  • Continue to program/save/store phone numbers to all devices using the full 10-digit telephone number.
  • Verify that all services and equipment – such as automatic dialers, life-safety & medical alert systems, alarm/security systems and security gates, call-forwarding settings and voicemail services – recognize the new area code as a valid phone number.
People with questions can visit the NCUC website.
