CHAPEL HILL, N.C. — A 90-year-old man missing for three days and who was the subject of a Silver Alert was found safe Monday in woods near the retirement community he lived in.

How Richard Leslie Silva ended up in those woods is still a mystery.

"We called 911 around 5:30 (p.m. Friday) when he didn't come to dinner because he's a very methodical man and he did not miss his meals," said Pat Spriggs, CEO of the Carol Woods Retirement Community.

Residents in the retirement community live an independent lifestyle. It's not uncommon for them to take walks or trips in their vehicles.

But on Friday, staff members became concerned when he didn't show up for a meeting.

"He was supposed to meet his partner in their apartment and when he did not show up about an hour and half she called us," Spriggs said.

After searching for several hours, the facility contacted Chapel Hill police.

Staffers were also worried because Silva is diabetic and can experience cognitive problems if without his medicine for an extended time.

On Monday, Silva was being evaluated at UNC Hospitals.

"I"m elated, euphoric, relieved," Spriggs said.
