Estrella left the hospital at UNC-Chapel Hill Thursday morning. Her mother says she left in a lot of pain and she fears it may be a very long road to recovery.
“The only relief she’s getting is if you massage her head like this,” Renota said.
Nevertheless, her family is thankful she’s back in their arms.
“It could have been worse than what it was,” Renota said.
Retona said Estrella was riding in the car with her, her husband and her other daughter when shots were fired.
“My husband didn’t know whether to hit the gas or turn in so he hit the gas and they kept shooting,” said Renota.
Estrella was hit four times, three times in the back and once in her head.
“The next thing I know, my oldest daughter had jumped on top of the little one trying to hold her and the little one was telling us she couldn’t breathe.”
Estrella spent almost a week in the hospital. Renota said her daughter is just not the same.
“I lost my baby. When I speak to her, she doesn’t look at me she turns her head for me she don’t say 'mommy I love you.'”
“She’s strong and she’s got all her family behind her and we love her. We’re ready to get our little girl back,” said Renota.
