Go Ask Mom

9 family-friendly activities for weekend of April 30 to May 2

Back in March 2020, I stopped Go Ask Mom's weekly weekend plans post because, well, there wasn't really anything happening. But things are changing, so I'm resurrecting this weekly feature. (Yay!) Going forward, you'll find both in-person and virtual activities in this space on Thursdays.

Here's what's happening on the family-friendly front this weekend!

Strawberry farms are opening for picking. Check our farm database to find a farm near you. (Just check ahead to make sure they have strawberries available.)
Triangle Drive-In at Triangle Town Center will screen "Ratatouille" at 8:15 p.m., Friday, and Marvel's The Avengers at 8:15 p.m., Saturday. Tickets are $10 per person.
The Drive In at Carraway Village in Chapel Hill will screen "Footloose" at 8:15 p.m., April 30, and "Ferris Bueller's Day Off," at 8:15 p.m., May 1. Tickets are $12.90 for adults and $10.75 for kids ages 4 to 10.

Wake Forest's Taylor Street Sprayground is open for play. It features 16 jet streams and other pieces that dump, spray or mist water at kids. Check my earlier post for hours and more information.

The City Nature Challenge runs Friday through Monday and is an opportunity for everybody to help out scientists by documenting the creatures and plants in our backyards and parks. The N.C. Museum of Natural Sciences' website has lots of information about how families can participate this weekend, including a virtual kickoff at 2 p.m., Friday, and video tutorial that you can watch at any time.
Dix Park in Raleigh will be screening "Coco" at 8 p.m., Saturday. It's free, but you must pre-register in advance via Eventbrite. One ticket is required per vehicle. Gates open at 7 p.m.
We have a couple of consignment sales. Take Two Kidsignment Sale, sponsored by the Triangle Parents of Multiples, will take place from noon to 4 p.m., Saturday, at 7000 Creedmoor Rd., Raleigh. And the Kids EveryWEAR sale opened over the weekend and will continue this coming weekend. Public shopping hours are 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., Friday, 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., Saturday, and 1 p.m. to 6 p.m., Sunday. It takes place at South Hills Mall, 1213 Buck Jones Rd., Raleigh.
The N.C. Symphony will offer a virtual concert featuring "Peter and the Wolf," at 3 p.m., Saturday. Viewers can stream the concert to their homes and watch them on-demand for 20 days after each concert. Tickets are $21.46. It's the first of a three-concert series for young people.
