83-year-old drowns in pond across from assisted living facility
An 83-year-old man died Saturday after being pulled from a small lake in Southern Pines.
Posted — UpdatedEmergency responders were called to the pond, which is across the street from the St. Joseph of the Pines Coventry assisted living facility at 105 Gossman Drive, just before 1 p.m.
Authorities said they were not sure if the 83-year-old, identified as Pete Grine, slipped on the edge and fell into the water, had a medical emergency, or walked into the pond voluntarily.
In a statement, St. Joseph of the Pines Coventry said Grine was a retired urologist who was a resident at the facility.
The statement said Grine had just eaten lunch with another resident and the pair were walking back to Coventry when the incident occurred.
Staff members attempted to resuscitate Grine but were not successful.
"This appears to be an unfortunate accident," said Steven Kastner, president and CEO for St. Joesph of the Pines. "Our thoughts and prayers are with the Grine family."
