DURHAM, N.C. — The Durham Rescue Mission is at it again -- serving a warm Thanksgiving dinner to the people who need it most.

Preparations for the annual Thanksgiving Community Dinner and Meals on Wheels started Wednesday afternoon when volunteers set up tables and chairs under a tent in the parking lot of the Durham Rescue Mission’s Center for Hope.

At 6:30 p.m., 80 turkeys were rubbed down with seasoning, and at 7 p.m., they were placed on outdoor grills.

As many as 500 volunteers will spend their Thanksgiving setting tables and serving and delivering food to make sure the event is a success.

Volunteers showed up at 7 a.m. on Thursday to start slicing the 80 turkeys and serve dinner at noon.

Each family that shows up will receive a bag of groceries to take home and cook for another meal. There will also be games and prizes for the children and an inflatable slide, warm winter coats and other clothes.

In addition to the main meal, 325 Thanksgiving meals will be delivered to community members unable to leave their house for the large dinner.
