One child was killed and another injured when the car they were traveling in ran off the road and into a Johnston County ditch on Sunday.

Authorities charged the driver, Anthony Furr, 34, of Garner, with driving while impaired, reckless driving and misdemeanor child abuse. Additional charges are possible.

Sgt. Marcus Bethea of the North Carolina State Highway Patrol said speed and alcohol appeared to have been factors in Furr's loss of control of the vehicle.

An 8-year-girl who was a passenger in the car died of injuries suffered in the crash. A 3-year-old child and a woman, Jessica Furr, 32, of Garner, were also injured, but they were expected to recover.

Bethea said Anthony Furr was southbound on Winston Road Sunday afternoon when he ran off the road to the right, flipped the car several times and ended up in the ditch. He could face additional charges as the investigation into the crash continues.
