COROLLA, N.C. — A 7-year-old boy whose family was vacationing on the Outer Banks died over the weekend when he became stuck in the doors of the elevator in the beach house where the family was staying, authorities said.

The OBX Today news website reported that the accident occurred Sunday evening at a home in the 1100 block of Franklyn Street in Corolla.

Twiddy Vacation Rentals describes the home as a four-story oceanfront property.

According to audio from first responders obtained by the Broadcastify service, the elevator was reported to be stopped between the second and third floors and the child stuck between the doors.

"At this time, it is not known how the accident occurred," Ralph Melton, Currituck County fire and EMS chief, said in an email to WRAL News.

The family was visiting from Canton, Ohio.
