How we view the world and the people around us means so much to who we are, how we act, how we treat others, and what we stand up for. Few things can become ingrained and cemented quite as hard as our perspective, but every so often, something comes along that shifts everything, bringing new things into focus and shedding new light on things we thought we already understood. Books often do just that for me, and here are 7 books that shifted my perspective for the better!

White Too Long by Robert P. Jones

As a white, Christian man, church has always been the place I felt racism should never be experienced, and has been the one place where I have witnessed it the most. In White Too Long, Jones explores why that is by taking a closer look at the history of systematic racism in some of the country's biggest denominations and also adds hope for a better future.

Last Chance to See by Douglas Adams and Mark Carwardine

Life is precious and learning about so many amazing creatures that were on the brink of extinction and the people who were and are fighting to protect them is truly inspiring. Adams' ever-present humor adds yet another layer to this book that really sparked a new respect for our planet and its creatures in me.

Everybody Always by Bob Goff

Love everyone is a well known rule for Christians, and one that most people regardless of religion try to live by, but it's hard! Bob Goff uses his phenomenal storytelling skills to give examples of what loving others really looks like and shows that really loving everyone is really possible!

Sometimes a change in perspective is just noticing for the first time things that were always there. This practical guide to using the clues that nature gives you to understand your surroundings better will have you looking at your backyard, park, or hiking trail in an entirely new light!

Jesus Feminist by Sarah Bessey

The American church has never really been good at gender equality, using mistranslated scriptures or scriptures taken out of context as a weight keeping women quiet and even out of ministry. This book puts those scriptures back into context and explores the radical views that Jesus, Paul, and others had of women and their roles in the faith and in society.

Leaders Eat Last by Simon Sinek

What does it take to be a leader? It doesn't take an alpha personality, or someone who can bully their way to the top! Instead, Sinek shifts focus to the caring leader who can get the most out of their team. Your perspective of leaders, and of people in general, just may get a tweak in focus!

Everyone who knows me is now rolling their eyes because I was able to get a fishing book onto the list. It wasn't the fishing stories that made a big change in my perspective though. It was the reports of how polluted the world's rivers are and how many of the amazing fish in these systems are on the verge of extinction that really forced me to take a look at my habits and consumption and how they affect the planet.
