63-year-old woman bitten by shark
Barbara Corey of Supply, NC, was bitten by a shark in the water at Holden Beach, Thursday according to the Holden Beach Police Department.
Posted — UpdatedCorey was wading in three to four feet of water in the 200 block of Ocean Blvd. East when she felt something bite her right foot in the water and then thrash around. She made her way to shore and received assistance from people on the beach. She found a bite wound on her right foot.
Holden Beach Police, Brunswick County EMS and emergency responders from Tri-Beach Fire Department responded to the scene.
Corey was treated at Brunswick Community Hospital and was in stable condition after treatment.
Holden Beach P.D. offered the following advice for beach goers to avoid sharks:
- Swim in groups
- Avoid being in water during darkness hours or at dusk or dawn
- Avoid wearing shiny jewelry
- Do not enter the water if bleeding from an open would or if menstruating
- Refrain from excess splashing
