CARY, N.C. — A Cary mother says her 6-year-old daughter died from the flu last week.
According to a GoFundMe page, Emily Grace Muth started exhibiting signs of the flu last Tuesday and died Friday as a result of the illness.

A funeral for Muth is set for Thursday at the Cary Church of Christ on Tryon Road.

As of Thursday, when the state releases statistics about flu deaths, at least 42 people, including two other children, had died as a result of the flu during a season that got off to an early start and is expected to worsen.
State officials said the flu season began in October and the virus has been more virulent than usual this year.

Flu symptoms include:

  • A cough and/or sore throat
  • A runny or stuffy nose
  • Headaches and/or body aches
  • Chills
  • Fatigue
  • Nausea, vomiting, and/or diarrhea (most common in children)
