FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. — Police are searching Wednesday for the person who shot and killed two men and a 6-month-old baby girl.

Fayetteville police officers on Tuesday found two men dead inside a home. A baby injured in the shooting died Wednesday at a hospital.

According to police radio traffic, the 6-month-old girl had multiple gunshot wounds when officers arrived at 8:30 p.m. at the home on Bunce Road near Lagoon Drive.

Police identified the two men who died as Terrance Jaiquann Melvin, 26, and Johnathan Alexander McMillian, 33.

Family members said the 6-month-old's mother dropped her off at Melvin's home on Bunce Road so she could spend time with her father. When she returned, crime scene tape surrounded the home and police were all over the place.

Melvin worked at a car wash owned by Maurice McRae, who is devastated by the young father's death.

"He was in the house enjoying some quality time with his daughter, and basically, he was assassinated," McRae said. "Anytime, if you're in your home and somebody comes in ... and takes your life with your child in your hand, that says a lot about the character of the person that killed him."

Family and friends described Melvin as a good man and good father.

McRae knew the family well, especially Melvin's mother.

"He has a sister ... he has nieces and nephews ... and I really feel sorry for her because he was her only son, and as a parent, I can't imagine to lose one of my sons," he said.

"It's just a sad situation ... because that's an innocent child," said Amanda Clifton, whose sister lives next door.

Investigators haven't released a motive but said this wasn't a random crime. Neighbors still aren't comforted.

"I'm very concerned," said Zykayra Robinson. "We usually don't have this type of traumatic stuff happen on this side of town ... so it's very heartbreaking knowing that the infant died."
