Widespread power outage in Vance and Warren counties
HENDERSON, N.C. — A widespread power outage forced Vance County Schools to open two hours late on Tuesday.

At 7 a.m., an estimated 3,366 customers were without power in Vance County, and 2,686 were without power in neighboring Warren County, according to outage maps. Around 14,000 customers were originally without power.

Vance schools will operate on a two-hour delay. Warren County Schools had not made an announcement at 7 a.m.

A spokesperson from Duke Energy said a transmission line was damaged in the area when a static wire, a safety line that can help provide grounding for the power line in the event of a lightning strike, broke, which caused the power line to shut down.

Some customers have been switched to other power lines while crews make repairs, he said, which reduced the number of impacted customers to around 6,000.

Officials are still investigating what caused the downed wire.

According to Duke Energy, the customers who are still without power may not have their power restored until 1 p.m.
