RALEIGH, N.C. — When you pay for a service, you expect to get it. If you don't get it, you expect a refund. That may sounds simple, but it was not that easy for one man.

In April, Freddie Warters hired Lambert Cabinet and Woodworks of Maxton to replace the cabinet fronts and drawers in the kitchen of an apartment he was remodeling for his mother. The total cost for the work was $1,675.

"He wanted half the money down, so I gave him half the money and he didn't come back," he said.

Warters said owner Dwayne Lambert was supposed to start in two weeks.

"Two weeks went by. Three weeks went by. A month went by, and we hadn't heard anything from him," Waters said.

Warters said he left repeated messages, sent a certified letter and even faxed the same letter. He said he finally got Lambert on the phone near the end of May.

"He told me that he had sickness in the family and that he had been going to Chapel Hill and he was behind, but he would be here on Thursday. That was the last time I talked to him," Warters said.

A month later, Warters cabinets were still wide open, so he called Five on Your Side. When Five On Your Side called Lambert. He did not want to talk on camera. He blamed the delays on the deaths of two family members and his own sickness. Ten days later, Warters got a check for $837.

"I was tickled to death. I didn't think I'd ever get any money back out of him and I certainly do appreciate it," he said.

Warters said he has now hired a new contractor to install doors and drawers. He said if Lambert was having family problems, he just wishes he would have realized he could not do the work and refunded the money.
