Botched Alarm Installation Leads Man To 5 On Your Side

CALDWELL, N.C — An alarm system helps Leroy Laws feel more secure.

He got it about three years ago. It got a test right away.

"About two weeks after I got the alarm, the back door was pried open at 1:30 in the morning and it blasted," Laws said.

Everything seemed fine until February of this year.

"I noticed water running down the door, and I just thought the door wasn't sealing and it was blowing in from the outside," Laws said.

Soon after, the alarm went off for no reason. Laws didn't realize the two were related until an ADT technician assessed the problem. Laws said the technician told him the problem actually started when the alarm was installed.

"(The technician) said: 'He cut all the way through your roof. And its water has come and soaked all the way down the door,'" Laws said.

Water came through the hole for more than 2½ years.

"It saturated the wood and turned it all brown and rotted, and it started running out," Laws said.

Laws wanted ADT to pay for the estimated $2,000 in repairs. He said ADT pointed him to several different people within the company. One representative requested an estimate. Laws said he sent it and then left repeated messages that were never returned.

"I just feel like I've been pushed off like it wasn't no big thing," Laws said.

Five on Your Side called ADT. Spokeswoman Diane Silverman had someone contact Laws. He met with an ADT adjuster on Monday, turned in an estimate on Tuesday, and the company agreed to pay the $2,000 claim.
