Look in the Mirror to get the Job You Want!

Dress professional when you're trying to land a job!

You’ve probably heard us talking about it on the air this week. Wednesday, WRAL is co-sponsoring a Career Expo at the Raleigh Convention Center. More than 80 companies are taking part. Attendees can get information about those companies and meet with key representatives. But I think one of the best parts of the Expo, will be the series of workshops offered. Topics include everything from How to Make Your Resume Talk to Coping with the Stresses of Job Loss to Finding the Work You Want after 50. But I think one possibility for a good workshop is missing: How to Dress for a Job Interview. I am often amazed, and sometimes actually embarrassed-- at the way some people dress for a job interview or even to pick up an application. That first impression is everything! It says a lot about you and what you think about the job you’re applying for! Dress professional! Look in the mirror before you walk out the door. Would you hire who you see? Sometimes, I wonder if some people don’t have a mirror! A producer here at WRAL often shares a saying I will never forget. She works an overnight shift. Few people ever see her. Despite that, she always looks professional and put together—jewelry, heels, the works! When people ask why, she repeats advice from her mother: “Don’t dress for the job you have. Dress for the job you want.” I like that. So whether you’re going to the Career Expo tomorrow, to an interview down the road, or just to pick up an application, heed that advice—dress for the job you want, and look in a mirror before you head out the door!

WRAL’s Joblink Career Expo runs Wednesday, September 23rd from 10 to 4 at the Raleigh Convention Center.
