5-year-old struck, killed by lightning on Outer Banks beach

A 5-year-old boy died Sunday afternoon after being struck by lightning on Carova Beach in Currituck County.

CURRITUCK COUNTY, N.C. — A 5-year-old boy died Sunday afternoon after being struck by lightning on Carova Beach in Currituck County.

Authorities said that emergency officials responded to the beach at about 4:10 p.m.

The boy, whose name was not released, went into cardiac arrest and resuscitation attempts were made before he was transported to Sentara Princess Hospital in Virginia Beach, where he was pronounced dead.

The boy had been vacationing with his family from out of town.
