DURHAM, N.C. — A man was shot and killed late while driving his car on Liberty Street on Wednesday night. His car lost control, crashing into a tree after hitting five people – including a child.

One of the adults who was hit is in critical condition. The others, according to police, are expected to recover.

WRAL News spoke with the family members of two people injured in the crash.

One man said his wife and 7-year-old daughter were hurt, but both are now home from the hospital.

Another man said his 23-year-old daughter-in-law was hit and is still in the hospital.

A witness described the scene as chaotic, with people jumping out of the way of the car after it lost control.

Witnesses said they heard 9 to 10 gunshots before the crash.

A man who lives in the neighborhood came outside to help clean up after the crash. He said he is used to hearing gunshots in the area but still takes pride in his community, which is why he decided to help.

"I just wanted to do something positive," he said. "That’s it. You see something you can participate in, do it."

Durham police have not released any information about a suspect.

Mark-Anthony Middleton with Durham City Council said earlier this year gun violence should be treated as a de facto state of emergency in the city.

"At a time when we should be focused on blessings during this season, this is a reminder that gun violence takes no holidays," Middleton said. "On behalf of the whole city, our hearts go out to the victim’s family and loved ones."
