Teenagers are some of the riskiest drivers on the road.

Between inexperience and immaturity, they’re almost four times as likely to get in a crash as drivers aged 20 and older.

Even worse, often times, teens drive older cars that have less protection and critical safety features, even though they need those features most.

For the first time ever, Consumer Reports and the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety teamed up to help.

They combined reliability results with crash test results, and found 65 used cars they say are perfect for first time drivers.

"When choosing a car for a young driver it can be a struggle to balance a vehicle that has very good crash protection with one that can help them avoid the crash in the first place," said Jennifer Stockburger, with Consumer Reports. "By combining with the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety for this list, we are providing a group of vehicles that check off both of those boxes"

Along with safety, performance and reliability, every car on the list is under $20,000.

Five are actually under $6,000.

They are the Mazda 3, Honda Civic Sedan, Subaru Legacy, Lincoln MKZ, and Hyundai Tucson, ranging from model year 2011 to 2015.

Before buying any used car, even one that's on this list, it is best to check for outstanding recalls and have it inspected by a qualified mechanic.
