RALEIGH, N.C. — When people have trouble sleeping or wake up with aches and pains, they often blame their mattress--but sometimes the real problem is their pillow.

With so many pillow options on the market, it's easy to have trouble deciding which pillow is your perfect match.

Consumer Reports just finished testing pillows from popular brands to see which ones are best for a good night’s sleep.

Some people prefer memory foam. Others need their pillow to be 'cool' to the touch. Some prefer fluffy soft pillows, and others need a firm pillow.

Consumer Reports tested nearly a dozen pillows from popular brands with prices ranging from $4 to $170.

Haniya Rae, Consumer Reports Home Editor, said, "In our tests, we assess pillows based on how well they support the head and neck of both back and side sleepers of a range of sizes.”

The pillows consisted mostly of memory foam, polyester fibers or a combination of both.

The bottom line for good support and a long-lasting pillow: Skip cheaper pillows.

“In our tests, we found that pillows that were lower priced tended not to hold up as well as pillows that cost a little bit more," said Rae.

Yet even some pricier pillows, like the $40 dollar MyPillow Classic and the$65 dollar Casper, rated only 'fair' for resilience.

Consumer Reports said the best of the bunch for both back and side sleepers of any size is the $60 dollar Coop Home Goods Premium Adjustable Loft Pillow. Plus, it comes with an extra foam kit so you can adjust the pillow to your liking.

Double check labels to see instructions for keeping pillow fresh. Most should be washed in hot water at least twice a year, and pillows should be replaced every one or two years.
