RALEIGH, N.C. — A mistake at a Midas service center destroyed the engine of a brand new truck. The truck’s owner couldn’t get anyone to take responsibility until 5 On Your Side’s stepped in and made sure he didn’t have to pay for the $14,000 repair.

Roscoe Emanuel bought the truck at Performance Ford in Clinton late last year. He took it on a cross country trip and was in Oklahoma when he needed an oil change.

“Midas said I could bring it down and they could change the oil,” Emanuel said.

About 1,500 miles later, Emanuel said the low oil light came on.

The dealership in Clinton checked it out and found the oil filter was three rotations from being tight and so much oil had leaked out, the engine was ruined and needed to be replaced.

“I don’t have $20,000 to put a motor in,” said Emanuel.

Emanuel called the Midas location where he got the service and a corporate office, but wasn’t getting anywhere so he contacted 5 On Your Side.

"I just want my truck fixed. That’s all," said Emanuel. "That’s all I’m asking for."

5 On Your Side looked through Emanuel’s records and saw that he was well within the 90 day warranty when this happened. 5 On Your Side contacted the owner of the Midas location, TBC Corporation, and helped Emanuel file a claim.

Multiple people at TBC told 5 On Your Side the case was sent to Sedgwick Claims Management Services for investigation, but Sedgwick had no record of Emanuel’s case. Then finally, Emanuel got the news he’d been waiting more than a month for.

The $14,000 engine replacement was authorized and Emanuel didn’t have to pay a thing.

"You’re the only one that’s really tried to help me. And I appreciate that," said Emanuel.

5 On Your Side figured out that this was never Sedgwick’s case at all. They don’t handle claims for TBC corporation’s Midas locations. Instead, each franchise location has their own insurer.

When 5 On Your Side alerted TBC to their miscommunication in Emanuel’s case, they said they would correct that issue with their customer service representatives. It's an important reminder to always save your vehicle service records in case something does go wrong.
