5 On Your Side: Best used car options for teens pair value, safety features

Stats show teens are more likely to get in a wreck when drivers in any other age group. That’s why it makes sense to invest in a car with serious safety features.

The fact is, teens will be teens and too often, they’re reckless on the road. Combined with their lack of experience, the results can be tragic.

Teen drivers need a safe, reliable and affordable used car.

“The used car market is really tough right now, but that doesn’t mean you should sacrifice important safety features, like electronic stability control and the newest accident avoidance systems, which are especially important for new drivers,” says Jennifer Stockburger, Consumer Reports’ auto expert.

The list combines Consumer Reports’ expertise in performance and reliability with crash test data from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.

Here is the list of the 61 models named. It includes the Mazda 3, Toyota Prius and the Outback and Legacy models from Subaru.
