5 On Your Side asks NC DMV about delays

For many though, that’s where they hit a snag.

Richard Walker emailed 5 On Your Side, saying he can’t get an appointment in Cumberland County.

He tells us he’s "been trying for 2 weeks … no times are available."

Another viewer, Erin Leal, says she and her husband were told they "will have to wait six weeks" to get a title on a car they need to sell.

5 On Your Side reached out to the Department of Motor Vehicles.

Spokesman Steve Abbott told 5 On Your Side, 26 DMV offices remain closed across the state, saying "staffing is the big issue."

Abbott says many employees are not working.

He cited staff health conditions and concerns, and child care issues with online schooling and when daycares closed. Abbott says employees are using PTO or taking unpaid leave.

Abbott says they "…expect more staffers to return as schools .. reopen, and when we move into Phase 3 of reopening the state."

So what can you do now?

5 On Your Side learned appointments can be made up to four weeks in advance. The best time to check is weekday mornings, because appointment slots are added overnight.

The DMV re-opened four offices this week to help ease demand.

They’re also adjusting appointment times to add a few more per day, and working to make them available six weeks out, instead of four.

Remember some things, such as a simple license renewal, can be done completely online.
