GARNER, N.C. — A man is suspected of driving while impaired in a three-car accident in Garner that left five people injured early Saturday morning, police said.

A 1992 Toyota was going east on Garner Road near Technical Court shortly after 6 a.m. The Toyota crossed the center line and struck a 1997 Nissan Maxima that was traveling west, Lieutenant Chris Hagwood of the Garner Police Department said.

Two pedestrians had stopped to help when a third vehicle coming west on Garner Road struck them and the Toyota. The driver of the third vehicle apparently did not see the accident scene until too late, Hagwood said.

The two pedestrians were not seriously hurt, and the driver of the Toyota and his two passengers were taken to WakeMed with non-life-threatening injuries.

The two passengers had to be cut out of the Toyota, Hagwood said. The driver was able to get out on his own.

Hagwood said police suspect the driver of the Toyota was driving while impaired. Charges are pending.

Police have not released the names of the accident victims.
