Five companies, including some unfamiliar names, have expressed interest in bringing electric scooters to the Bull City.

Bird and Lime, which currently operate in Raleigh, submitted applications for a permit. Spin, Lyft and Gotcha also want to be included in the scooter craze.

The city accepted applications from Nov. 28 to Dec. 20 after the city council adopted an ordinance with rules and fee requirements in October.
The policy states riders must be at least 16 years old and wear a helmet. The scooters will be prohibited from greenway trails and sidewalks and cannot be parked at the same location for more than three days.

The fees include a $1,000 application fee, a $500 permit renewal and $100 for each scooter injected into the system.

Dale McKeel, bicycle and pedestrian coordinator, said city staff is currently reviewing the five applications and “will be following up with each of the companies to clarify responses.”

McKeel says each company must be approved with a permit before beginning operations.

There is no timeline for a final decision.
