400 holes in 24 hours: Durham golfer helps families of fallen soldiers
One local golfer is planning to play 400 holes in 24 hours to raise money for fallen soldiers.
Posted — UpdatedLabor Day is no ordinary day on the golf course for Karl Kimball.
"We think about our military, and the sacrifice they paid on occasion. The families who have been impacted, they live with this each and every day," Kimball said.
In preparation for the event, he spent two days spray painting the names of 200 North Carolina soldiers killed in action on the golf course.
"I know every one of those soldiers out there," Kimball said. "I have read every single one of their stories, every single one of them, so I am connected to them."
Kimball said it took him 10 hours to paint what he calls the "Fairway of Honor," names, branches of service and rank of the soldiers who died since Operation Enduring Freedom began.
The 24-hour golf match will begin at 6 p.m., and Kimball will use glow in the dark balls during the overnight hours. To date, Kimball and his fellow golfers have raised more than $100,000 for the Folds of Honor Foundation.
Kimball's marathon is part of Patriot Week, celebrated at golf courses across the country.
"I've had a Marine come out and not say a word to me and hand me 10 $100 bills. It's a very emotional process," he said.
