ERWIN, N.C. — A four-year-old boy accidently shot his grandmother in Erwin on Sunday.

Erwin Police Chief Jonathan Johnson said the family was traveling through North Carolina to Virginia when they stopped for lunch at Carlie C's IGA around noon.

The boy, his grandmother and some other family members stayed inside the RV while others went inside.

The boy picked up a gun in the family vehicle and was playing with it. When his grandmother tried to take it from him, the gun discharged and she was shot in the abdomen. Johnson said the child immediately dropped the gun.

The grandmother was taken to a local trauma center for treatment. Johnson said her injuries do not appear to be life threatening.

The shooting is still under investigation.

Johnson said charges are possible.
