A woman has turned herself in for her role in a crash from which her child died.

A three-month-old girl was killed in a crash on Interstate 85 in Durham on Tuesday, Jan. 18.

The crash occurred around 4:15 when Shanelle Johnson was driving a 2012 Volkswagen and tried to merge into the far left lane on I-85 North between U.S. Highway 70 and East Club Boulevard. Johnson turned herself in at the Durham County Jail on Wednesday. She received a $50,000 secured bond.

Durham police report that Johnson attempted to pass a BMW and collided with the vehicle's rear, causing her Volkswagen to overturn. Two children - a three-month-old girl and a four-year-old girl - were thrown from Johnson's vehicle.

The girl was pronounced dead at the scene. The four-year-old had critical injuries. Neither child was identified in a release from authorities.

Johnson and the driver of the BMW were taken to the hospital for non-life-threatening injuries. The crash closed the northbound lanes for several hours.

Johnson was cited for misdemeanor death by vehicle, careless and reckless driving and failure to secure a passenger under the age of 16.

Police are still investigating the crash.
