Three firefighters were injured overnight while battling a large house fire in Chatham County.

Two of the injuries were trauma-related; another was heat-related.

The firefighters were taken to the hospital to be treated, but are expected to be released today.

The blaze was a tough battle for crews, who had to call in support from other departments, as well as additional EMS units. Officials said they were concerned about the size of the fire, as well as the complicating factor of having so many trees surrounding the home.

Officials said there had been concern the fire could spread – but the additional units helped manage the fire.

Officials said the home was a 'total loss' after a fire that began around 1:20 a.m. off Hwy 42 in Goldston.

According to officials, the homeowner was not injured in the fire, which began as a mattress fire. The homeowner reportedly had to drag the mattress through the entire house to get it outside.

Investigators are still trying to determine what caused the mattress to catch fire.

WRAL News is at the Goldston Fire Department, and will provide any updates as they are released.
