RALEIGH, N.C. — The more we use our smartphones, the higher the chance is that we'll run out of storage space on them at the worst possible moment.

That's why these three free apps were created to help users manage their smartphone space.

Google has released a couple of good options for Android users, including an app called Files Go. Files Go checks your storage and frees space by trashing old files.

It's a pretty lightweight app that won't slow down your phone, and it also allows you to share files with people nearby -- similar to Apple's AirDrop feature.

Another choice for Android users is AMC Cleaner. AMC Cleaner is easy to use, and it deep scans phones to find the biggest files that take up the most storage space. That includes old messages in your social media apps and old files hiding out that you forgot to delete.

Both are free in the Google Play Store.

iPhone users should check out the Magic Phone Cleaner app. With its simple design, this app lets you easily evaluate your storage by identifying large pictures and video files and deciding whether you want to keep them or trash them.

Magic Phone Cleaner is free in the App Store.
