RALEIGH, N.C. — After promises to increase patrol in Raleigh's Glenwood South district, state officials seized dozens of fake I.D.s during an operation on April 7.

Agents with the state's division of Alcohol Law Enforcement stopped 25 underage people who attempted to get inside the bar Teets.

"Teets uses an ID scanner and other procedures as recommended by the ALE in order to minimize the possibility of an underage person being allowed in," said Bates Battaglia, owner of the bar.

He did not say whether the scanner identified the IDs as fake or whether the people were caught some other way.

The 25 people were caught before entering the bar and denied entry.

"Other officers charged them on the sidewalk," Battagila said.

Glenwood South, a popular bar district in Raleigh, has become the source of an increasing number of calls and complaints to police by a growing number of residents.

WRAL News uncovered 299 crimes reported in the district between Jan. 1 and March 9. That’s up 36% from the same time period in 2019, before the COVID-19 pandemic.

Last year, nearly 200 assaults were reported in Glenwood South, and this year’s numbers, 56 as of late March, puts the area on track to surpass last year’s total.

A Raleigh police officer assigned to Glenwood South Hospitality District told WRAL News that his primary goal is the same its ever been: make sure the area is safe and comfortable for everyone.

“I believe anytime you combine crowds of people with alcohol there will be problems,” he said. "What the public will see is more officers."
