No weekend plans? Here's what's happening on the family fun front. As always, check WRAL.com's Out & About section, along with our guides on:
- Holiday light shows
- Santa visits
- Holiday performances, which include Raleigh Little Theatre's Cinderella, Rudolph, Nutcracker and more this weekend.
- Santa trains, including the Polar Express at the NC Transportation Museum and Santa Trolley in downtown Raleigh (a trolley is sort of like a train ...)
- Parades or tree lightings, including in Cary, Holly Springs, Durham, Chapel Hill, Clayton and Fayetteville
- Polar Express screenings
Disney on Ice presents Road Trip Adventures stops at the PNC Arena from Dec. 11 to Dec. 15 for eight shows.
Both the State Capitol and NC Executive Mansion will host open houses starting Thursday. It runs through Saturday at the State Capitol and Sunday at the Executive Mansion. Both are free. Pre-registration is not required.
The 12th annual St. Nicholas European Christmas Market is at the Holshouser Building at the fairgrounds Friday, Dec. 13, and Saturday, Dec. 14. There will be a visit with Saint Nicholas, a children's book author from Finland and live music and performances. The market features holiday food and shopping in the European Christmas Market tradition. The event is free.
North Raleigh Model Train Club has again set up a sprawling train set for the public to enjoy at Raleigh Union Station. It will be free to see from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., weekends, through Dec. 29, including this weekend.
Durham's Holiday Fun Fest is 1 p.m. to 4 p.m., Saturday, Dec. 14, at Blackwell Street between Morehead and West Lakewood Avenue. The free event includes snow sledding, visits with Santa and more. It takes place after the Durham Holiday Parade.
Morehead Planetarium will host a Teen Science Cafe from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., Friday, Dec. 13. The free event for teens will focus on insights from social psychology about death.
And Star Families, also at Morehead, will focus on The Milky Way. The program for kids ages 7 to 12 is 3:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m., Saturday, Dec. 14. Tickets are $9.25 for adults and $8.25 for kids.
The NCAA Division I Men's Soccer Championship takes place on Dec. 13 and Dec. 15 at WakeMed Soccer Park. Games are scheduled for 6 p.m. and 8:30 p.m., Friday, Dec. 13. The championship is 6 p.m., Sunday.
The Cary hosts White Christmas Sing-along Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Watch the classic movie - and sing along!
Maple View Farm is hosting ice cream for breakfast with Santa from 8 a.m. to noon, Saturday, Dec. 14. You're invited to wear your pajamas and enjoy a special treat from a special holiday breakfast menu.
