20th anniversary of Kinston pharmaceutical plant explosion
The explosion and subsequent fire killed six people and led to industry wide changes.
Posted — UpdatedSunday marked the 20th anniversary of the West Pharmaceutical plant explosion in Kinston.
On Jan. 29, 2003, an explosion and fire sprawled across the plant, leaving the building a ruin marked by flames and a column of black smoke.
Six people died in the explosion and fire, while another 37 people were injured.
The incident led to national change in industrial regulations.
It was one of three combustible dust incidents in a two-year stretch.
