CARRBORO, N.C. — The town of Carrboro announced on Monday it would be canceling a music festival that was planned to be held downtown from Sept. 25 to 26.

Around 150 to 200 acts were expected to play over the weekend at 20 different venues, town officials wrote on Facebook.

"There was the hope that the newly-available vaccines would move us in the direction of being able to offer our traditional event," the Facebook post said.

Town officials said all of the counties surrounding Orange are considered high-risk areas for community spread of COVID-19, according to data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

"The idea of bringing in potentially a couple of thousand festival attendees is of concern, especially for our community members who are immunocompromised or unable to be vaccinated," the Town of Carrboro wrote on Facebook.

Some of the venues that planned to host the festival this year were closed down due to rising coronavirus cases.

Performers slated to make an appearance indoors were concerned about their safety and well-being, town officials said.

"While we were hopeful and very excited for the opportunity to return with our traditional event, our number one priority is the safety of our performers, our volunteers, the staff of our participating venues, and the overall community."

Next year's event is scheduled for October.
