2011-12 Children's Series: PlayMakers Repertory Company

While the Chapel Hill group doesn't have any shows planned specifically for families, it offers some very handy age recommendations for its upcoming performances.

While PlayMakers Repertory Company, UNC-Chapel Hill's professional theater in residence, doesn't have any shows planned specifically for families, it does offer some very handy age recommendations for its upcoming performances. These shows will appeal mostly to older kids - ages 10 and up. There are definitely some opportunities for parents of teens.

Here are shows that might appeal to families this season:

The Parchman Hour, runs Oct. 26 to Nov. 13. Using music and original accounts, this play explores the struggles of the Freedom Riders during the Civil Rights movement. The reality of racism and depictions of violence occur in this play. Best for ages 10 and up.
Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf, runs Nov. 30 to Dec. 18. Edward Albee’s masterpiece dissects a marriage and how love and hate are separated by a very fine line. There is cursing, drinking and sexual situations. Best for ages 13 and up.
The Making of a King Henry IV and Henry V, runs Jan. 28 to March 4. Prince Hal journeys from wayward youth to beloved King in Shakespeare’s tale. The realities of war and responsibility are explored in this epic presentation. Best for ages 10 and up.
Noises Off, runs April 4 to April 22. A raucous comedy, this play has some mild language and mild “undress. Best for ages 10 and up.
